10 Tips to Have the Best Kids' Party This Year

Alston Renfrow’s, Farmer’s Market themed, first birthday party from our July/August issue.

So it’s that time of year and your kid’s birthday is coming up. You need help? No problem, Cypress has got you covered. Here are 10 of the best tips that will help you throw the best birthday party your kid will ever have thus far.

Jace McKinley’s, “Where the Wild Things Are” themed, first birthday party from our September/October issue.

1. Try a themed party.

A theme party is a creative way to make a party special. For decorations, you can create party favors that go with the theme of your party. Some examples of theme parties are a carnival party, a tea party, or a pirate party.

2. Have an icebreaker activity to warm up the party.

Some icebreaker activities are face painting, making paper bag puppets, or decorating goody bags.

3. Have music or entertainment.

Entertainment doesn’t have to be expensive. On the invitation, ask the kids what some of their favorite songs are. Instead of paying for entertainment, play some of the newest children’s songs on a speaker. Musical chairs and musical hot potato can liven up any kids’ party.

4. Have a scavenger hunt. Kids can search for cheap little toys and candy.

They can also search for toys that go with the theme of your party.

5. Don’t overdo it.

A common party planning mistake is overdoing activities. Having too many activities can cause crankiness in younger children.

6. Create an adult space.

Be sure to have convenient seating for adults and separate refreshments.

7. Have an arts and crafts station.

Arts and crafts are a great way to involve guests. Younger kids can finger paint or make self-portraits. On the other hand, older kids can make tie-dye shirts or paper lanterns.

8. Create a stress-free guest list.

First, invite the child’s best friend or close group of friends. If you choose to have a small party email the invitations to the parents to avoid hurt feelings.

9. Plan the party towards the middle of the day.

To avoid interfering with nap time schedules, plan your party towards 12 p.m. through 3 p.m. The recommended length of a party is 2 hours.

10. Don’t open your gifts during the party.

In younger kids’ parties, opening gifts can cause jealousy among the children. This also avoids your child’s potentially negative reaction to some of the gifts.
